Thread: Branches of Iman/Aqeedah - what is it?

  1. #1

Default Branches of Iman/Aqeedah - what is it?

    Branches of Iman/Aqeedah

What is meant by this term (Branches of Iman/Aqeedah) and does this have any basis for it?

Are the "branches" considered those things that are not really part of Iman but they mention things which entails belief but does not amount to certainty?

Help would be appreciated - Jazak Allah Khair

This is how I understand the topic:

Basis of aqeeda are the following:
    1. Iman in Allah (swt) who is eternal and who created everything.
    2. Iman in Quran being the Book of Allah and Muhammad (saw) being the Messenger of Allah (swt).
    3. Iman in the Day of Judgement.

Now the branches of Iman are as follows:
    1. Iman in Sifaat of Allah (swt) are the branches of Iman in Allah.
    2. Iman in the detailed ayat and ahadith (e.g. previous Prophets, Books, Angels, etc.). These are branches of Iman in Quran and Muhammad (saw)
    3. Iman in the various details related to Yum al-Qiyamah e.g. Paradise, Hell Fire etc. are branches of Iman in the Day of Judgement.

Both of Basis and Branches of Iman should be taken by certainty, although if branches of Iman like Punishment of the Grave and the like are not taken by certainty, it will not affect the Basis of Iman. It is the branches of Iman where difference of opinion arises based on how one takes it.

    Allah knows best.

If both (basis and branches) are to be taken with certainty then how can people differ in the branches - is it because people differ over what is "certainty" as well?

Can you provide any further commentaries on this by scholars?

    Basis of aqeeda are certain.

However, branches of aqeeda can be certain or not depending in the daleel. Hence those who consider Mutawatir Manawi as certain, they will take punishment of the grave into aqeeda while those who do not consider it as certain they will not take it into aqeeda. However, you will find that even those who take it into aqeeda do not make takfir on those who do not take it into aqeeda.
